Critical Thinking

Do you practice critical thinking?

Some ideas are better than others. The machinery for distinguishing them is an essential tool in dealing with the world and especially in dealing with the future.” Carl Sagan, The Burden of Skepticism.

Dr. Sagan was discussing the challenge of finding the right balance point between skeptical scrutiny of hypotheses and receptivity to new ideas. He was referring to critical thinking. Well, there is a pragmatic approach to critical thinking that assists with separating ideas into filet mignon and baloney. Have a look at Brain Pickings where there is a great post on the “Baloney Detection Kit.” It is worth your time to check. Make sure to watch the video!

So, no worries. I’m a skeptical guy by nature, I don’t like baloney, and I do like critical thinking. If, somehow, I haven’t used enough vigor to probe and pick apart what we’ve been told during our custom research, and what then follows in our writing, our even more skeptical editor certainly will.
